West of Ireland Golf Tours on the Wild Atlantic Way

‘Because, some days, nothing beats a really great drive’

Golf is quite simply a national pastime here in Ireland. With Irish golf legends such as Padraig Harrington, Rory McIlroy, and, more recently. Shane Lowry helping to elevate the sport’s profile to new heights, it is now one of our most loved and watched sports. And it seems that we are keen to grab a piece of the action for ourselves. Golf courses all over the country team with activity each weekend as budding golfers tee off for prizes or just for pleasure.

Ireland has much to offer the golfing enthusiast with some excellent championship courses to be found all over the island, North and South.  However, it is the West Coast of Ireland with its unspoiled beauty and dramatic untamed landscape which can offer a golfing experience which is both unique and memorable.

Wild Atlantic Way Golf

The spectacular Wild Atlantic Way runs from the North West of County Donegal all the way down to the southern tip of County Cork and offers the perfect roadmap for a golfing holiday like no other.

The golfing enthusiast can sample some of the world-class coastal courses which populate the West Coast while enjoying unbeatable views of the Atlantic and some excellent hospitality. There is no better way to begin an epic golfing tour of the Wild Atlantic Way than at the Ballyliffin Golf Club. This is one of the finest links courses in Ireland, offering two championship courses – The Old Links and Glashedy Links.  Other golfing highlights to be found are the award-winning Connemara Championship Golf Links in Galway, the unspoilt Lahinch Golf Club in Clare and the beautiful Ballybunion Golf Club in Kerry.

World-Class Golf Courses

‘It all lies on a peninsula between the bays of Drumcliff and Sligo; to the north, Ben Bulben rises like the prow of a great ship heading for eternal seas and away to the south is Knocknarea, where the cruel Queen Maeve lies buried high above her Connacht kingdom.’

Pat Ward Thomas

The beautifully evocative description above was penned about the excellent County Sligo Golf Links by the late golf writer Pat Ward Thomas.  You will be glad to know that this course is located less than an hour’s drive from the Ocean Sands Hotel, offering a truly unique golfing experience right on the shores of the Atlantic. Another excellent course which is just an hour from the hotel is the 6,700-yard Carne Golf Links in Belmullet, Co Mayo which was expertly built into a series of sand dunes overlooking Black Sod Bay.  Carne has been incorporated beautifully into the natural landscape with minimal site works and much to offer the visitor.

We also have a real golfing gem located right on our doorstep here at The Ocean Sands Hotel . The excellent Enniscrone Golf Links is just a 10-minute walk from the hotel, so guests can tee off straight after breakfast. Voted ‘Best in Connaght’ by Golfers Guide to Ireland, Enniscrone Golf Links offers an excellent user experience and is suitable for the amateur as well as the more seasoned golfer. This stunning championship links course overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and offers 27 holes across 400 acres for you to enjoy.
