Horse riding on the beach in County Sligo

‘Jobs fill your pocket, but adventures fill your soul’ – Jamie Lyn Beatty

There are few experiences more exhilarating than horse riding on the beach. We don’t know if it’s the ocean breeze or sea-spray which make it so special, but we do know that once you sample this unique riding experience here in the West of Ireland you will want to do it again and again. We may be biased but we happen to think that horse riding on the Wild Atlantic Way is the best kind of all with the stunning Atlantic Ocean providing a dramatic backdrop which is really like no other.

It doesn’t have to be all beach-focused, however. Enniscrone also has great potential for some gentle cantering along some of the quaint country lanes which lie further inland. If you are feeling a little more adventurous, you can even try a mountain trek. If riding holidays are your thing or you are looking to enjoy a unique horse and pony experience for the whole family in the beautiful West of Ireland, please read on.

Iceford Stables

Iceford Stables is a fully AIRE (Association of Irish Riding Establishments) approved riding school located just three miles from Enniscrone.   The stables provide well-trained and friendly horses which are suitable for the first-timer right through to the more experienced rider. Their instructors hold first aid, child protection and road safety certs to ensure that both horse and rider are in safe hands at all times. The stable instructors are also highly experienced in matching each rider with a horse that ideally suits their skill and ability to ensure everyone has fun safely.

Beach Rides

Iceford Riding Centre is proud to be the only stables offering beach rides in the Enniscrone area. Beach rides are an unforgettable way to experience Enniscrone beach from a whole new perspective. However, please note that they are open to experienced riders only. Enjoying a trail ride along sandy beaches will ensure you make a memory to last a lifetime. Each beach riding session is two hours in duration.

Countryside Treks

Riders of all skill levels are invited to take part in a 1-2 hour guided trek along quiet country roads and fields. This a great opportunity to experience the beauty of the Sligo countryside and is a real ‘back to nature’ experience for the whole family.

Mountain Rides

Mountain rides are suitable for novice and experienced riders and involve a full day (5-6 hours) exploring the impressive Ox Mountains. Starting out on a beautiful forest trek and taking in lakes, bogs and mountains along the way, this is certainly one to remember.

Pony Camps

The stables also run a regular series of pony camps during school holidays which include pony riding, stable management, pony care and a selection of mounted and unmounted games and activities. They are a great way for children to get to experience horses and ponies up close and to gain some riding experience while also making some new friends.
